Local summer theater is about to set records

By Larry Fennelly

The Midstate is always blessed with multiple summer productions. Some are independent of the theater group’s main season, while others are actually the first show in the lineup for the coming year.

In this latter category we have Macon Little Theatre’s production of “Guys and Dolls,” a classic musical from 1950 that features such tunes as “A Bushel and a Peck,” “Luck Be a Lady” and more. This tale of an unlikely romance is based on a short story by Damon Runyon and will run July 25-Aug. 3. Another summer show of the season-opener variety will be “Catfish Moon,” running July 11-26 at Warner Robins Little Theatre. This Southern comedy is said to be about three old friends revisiting the scene of childhood adventures.

Downtown, the folks at Theatre Macon are going wild this summer. Not only has the Youth Actors Company added a June 5-8 production of “The Pajama Game” to its season but TM also plans a dinner- theater production of the outrageous comedy “Greater Tuna” at the nearby Cox Capitol Theatre. Starring Jim Coleman and Scott Whatley, this venture will run June 6-21.

Also in June at TM, Lee Kingery and her husband, Ken Clark, will perform “Love Letters” (June 20), while stage veteran Charles Pecor will present his one-man show “Clarence Darrow” June 21.
TM’s main event of the summer will be a production of “City of Angels.” This musical is a film-noir detective story set in Hollywood. It’s running July 11-26.
